In many homes, the main drain line can become clogged over time. This clog can be due to normal blockages from grease and household items or outside problems like encroaching root systems.
Whatever the reason, a blocked drain line is going to cause problems. Resolving the problem should be done as quickly as possible to avoid backups and further cleanup and repair costs.
Drain clogs are one of the most common reasons plumbers are called out to Berlin homes. Drain line clogs, though more impactful for the in-house drains, are still relatively straightforward to clear.

How to clean a clogged drain?
The first step is to thread a snake with a Spade Cutter tip down through the clean-out pipe to chew through the obstruction and clear the line. As final step will be a Chain Knocker mounted to the snake to remove all build-ups from the inner tube wall.
How to Prevent Clogged Drains
You can prevent blockages by using store-bought chemical drain cleaners, but they can often cause corrosion and damage over time.
For a more cost-effective solution for cleaning drains, you can follow these steps:
- Pour a pot of boiling water down the drain.
- Add a 1/2 cup of baking soda and wait several minutes.
- Pour one cup vinegar and one cup hot water down the drain
- Let sit for 10 minutes.
- Flush with hot water.
Once you have cleaned your drains, try to keep them free from debris. Avoid scraping too much food or pour grease down your drains. Remember to remove clumps of loose hair from your pipes as well. Make this task easier by investing in snugly-fitting, metal screens for all your drains. With regular maintenance, you can avoid having to pay the costs for clearing clogged drains.
